What is Occupational Therapy?

Mental health challenges can have a big impact on daily life, affecting how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. This can make it harder to manage everyday tasks and participate in meaningful activities that support wellbeing.

Mental Health Occupational Therapy is about working alongside people to build skills, strategies, and confidence so they can do the things that matter most to them. We take a holistic approach, considering the physical, emotional, cognitive, sensory, and social aspects of each person, and develop supports that promote wellbeing and quality of life.

Occupational Therapy may include:

  • Self-care: Strategies to support personal routines such as hygiene, sleep, and managing health needs.

  • Living skills: Building confidence in meal preparation, grocery shopping, budgeting, laundry, home management, and using public transport.

  • Work and study: Developing skills for returning to or maintaining employment or education, including time management, organisation, and communication.

  • Leisure and social connection: Exploring meaningful activities that bring joy, purpose, and connection, while supporting social participation and reducing isolation.
